Lost Rudder H28

G'Day,
Lost rudder in the midst of the Tasman, near Lord Howe Island. Am looking for plans of , Herroscoff H28 rudders preferably with rear trim tab for wind vane. Know it's a long shot, but any help appreciated. Currently making my way up the east coast of oz with home/boat improvised rudder, hope to be in Qld in 3 days, in Coffs at the moment heading out tomorrow.

I dunno but if it's possible for you (tools, time, materials...) but I was just looking at Larry Pardey's Details of Classic Boat Contruction Vol. I, The Hull and building a rudder from scratch doesn't seem out of reach for even me with only a little wood-working experience. The book is out of print and not that easy to find but I think ABEbooks on line probably would give access to one. Beyond just building a rudder this book seems like it would be a help to anyone who owns or is thinking of buying a woody.

It's good to see there are still some of these classics out sailing. Back when I was living on my Seabird yawl I used to sail in company with a friend who had an H28. As I recall the rudder was a very simple affair with construction very typical of outboard rudders on woodies. Basicly vertical planks held by steel straps and gudgeons. The outline won't be too critical and can probably be approximated from old photos or drawings. You could use this opportunity to update the construction with a plywood core and fir or spruce packing covered with epoxy/glass.

Thanks for the responses, my apologies for not replying earlier. Fashioned a rudder from garden sleepers whilst in Newcastle NSW Oz and just arrived Cairns. Slow trip but it is still working. Not quite deep enough as the boat rounds up if I try full sail. Got here with 2nd reef in and 3/4 genoa all the way. It's been an interesting 2 months to say the least. Plans are on the way for origonal style rudder. Thanks again for your input.

The H28s are nice... almost bought one about 6 years ago, strong build, double skinned, very pretty interior. Somebody wanted her more than I could afford to.

Is this a wood one or one of the 3 - 400 glass ones built by compass yachts in NZ?, if its a glass one someone probably has the rudder mold somewhere although probably a couple of grand i would guess.I just saw a wood one (a ketch) last weekend in Cornacopia,wisconsin.Btw,my brother lost the rudder on a 36 ft colin archer type crossing the Tasman from NZ way back in 1960 and had to put in to Lord Howe to make repairs.
