Re: lifep04 batteries componets and lightning

I disagree.. my boat doesn’t require inverters or troublesome generators, just good alternators, good lithium iron phosphate batteries and 12v air conditioning units, my salon unit used to be a 115v 12000 BTU, used to run though an inverter, vessel got strike twice by lighting, all that equipment failed, consumption was 110amps, the lithium batteries BMS protected them, the air conditioning was replaced with a Military antimicrobial heat pump/ air conditioning system including a DC 12v water pump">raw water pump, the inverter was eliminated, consumption came down to 35 amps at full compressor speed, it is amazing how fast is now cooling and drying the salon, quiet, no vibration, simple, no electrolysis at all, total weight including batteries came out to be 183 Lbs, the old system with AGM, inverter, self contained air weighted over 400lb. Conclusion: double the run time, less noise, final cost was about 20% less, and the installation was done in just few hours.

So just to make sure, you claim to have more cooling capacity at 1/3rd of the energy consumption by switching from AC to DC and as a bonus lightning strikes go away?! You would have been Thomas Edison’s best friend!

Re: lifep04 batteries componets and lightning

Electronics are susceptible to 2 sources of damaging voltages. One is from the lightening itself traveling down the mast & thru the wires, equipment then to grnd. It takes 1 million volts to jump one meter so any kind of disconnect switch is ineffective. Electronics that have been installed with forethought, can be Easily removed & placed into a faraday cage eliminates the hi voltage spike. The other source of damage is from the induced voltage caused by the sudden rise & collapse of the electromagnetic field (created when lightning strikes) crosses wires. The faraday cage will protect from induced voltages as well. I was once knocked off an aluminum ladder due to an involuntary leg muscle contraction caused by the voltage induced by a strike 2-3 miles away.

The faraday cage can be a microwave or conventional oven. Individual faraday cages made from grounded metal screening to surrounding each device.

A Faraday cage does not need to be grounded

Jedi, lightning strikes will never go away, same as for wannabe marine electricians.
