Any opinions on solid stainless rails instead of lifelines?

I think they are a great idea and worth the weight. My girlfriend used to have a Nauticat 45 that had a teak caprail along the top of the stanchions and it felt very secure going forward. I was planning on putting stainles rails on my cat but ended up building a "workpit" where all sailhandling will take place, so I'm not planning on using the side decks much.
