Lewmar New Standard Portlight sizes

Now I'm confused. I was about to pull the pin on ordering some new seals for these Lewmar port lights, but now I don't know what to get.

They're definitely "New Standard" type (push to close, seam in the outside, look identical to the pictures), but they don't seem to be a size that exists. I originally thought they were "size 4" but the Lewmar documentation shows those as being 646x191mm overall (626x171 cutout size). The ones I have are about 695x191mm. The acrylic opening screen is 631mm wide so obviously the cutout needs to be way more than this, and 626mm doesn't make any sense.

Does anyone know of any weird sizes that were made in this style? They're 2004.

Or, does anyone know of a source of continuous new compatible seal strip that would fit these? I'm going to need about 1470mm of strip for each of the ten of these port lights I have, so about 15m of it needed.

Re: Lewmar New Standard Portlight sizes

I can identify them, but they're not the same size as any that Lewmar list. I can't believe they have special sizes that are just two inches longer than normal.

But if I have, then I still need the seal. Doesn't anyone make this in continuous lengths?

Try Hatchmasters. We bought just seals for ours. Like 20 feet. But ours are Old Standard.

The problem with the windows are that the alloy frame that opens has a split in the middle of it that allows water the seep past the seal and because the seal is so small it will leak over time as it breaks down ,to over come this apply clear silicone to the join in the alloy frame of the window .if you decide to buy the kits ,they come from the uk and the price is Aus is $150.00 per kit

Re: Lewmar New Standard Portlight sizes

Thanks for the messages, but perhaps I should clarify my question

I know what kind of hatches they are
They leak because the seals are old and need replacing
The kits are no use because they're the wrong size
I know they're not old standard so Hatchmasters don't have it

Does anyone know of anywhere that Lewmar New Standard seal is available in continuous lengths?

Re: Lewmar New Standard Portlight sizes

OK, here's another idea. Again, assuming you can't buy a big length:

From our experience on our Old Standard: Sometimes it's NOT the seal. While I did replace all of ours (30 years old), it wasn't the seal - they were in surprisingly good condition. The problem was the silicone that was originally used, especially where the abovementioned seams are. Use a dremel with a stainless brush wheel on it to get all of the old silicone out. If the seals are in decent shape, you could put them back in.

You could also buy the seals that are one size larger, and cut them down.

Re: Lewmar New Standard Portlight sizes

Thanks, that's definitely something I'll try. The seals are fairly hard, though, and I'd feel better if new ones had more give in them. I'm reluctant to try ripping out the old seals in case I break them getting them out, which would leave me with a much more leaky window and down here it can often take weeks to get parts. Did you manage to get them out intact easily? Refitting then with new silicone is probably worth a go, but since they're already 15 years old I'm reluctant to put in the amount of effort it would take to do ten of these and then still needing to re-do them.

I think you're referring to a different type though. These portlights are all less than 22 years old and have no opening frame nor seam in it. The join in the seal (if needed) could go at the top and have almost zero chance of leaking. The leak in these portlights comes from the small amount of water that sits at the bottom of the acrylic opening panel and against the rubber seal, and comes between the two rather than staying there or running off outside.

Maybe I'll take your suggestion of getting a larger one (I think the 4r/4l might just be bigger) and then giving it a go with the security of having a spare on hand if I break it.

It amazes me that with all the hundreds of thousands of these portlights that are out there, in boats of up to 20 years old, no company has got around to offering continuous lengths of this very common seal.

You, sir, are a genius. I did not get there with my searches. I have sent him an email and hope to get a result!

More importantly, I'll come back and post updates if that works.

Actually, I'd found that guy back when I was looking for seals for my Old Standard ones. Then Hatchmasters got the same seal. So I bought from Hatchmasters. Anyway, I was thinking about your problem and thought "I think I had found some in the UK...".

Good luck!

Re: Lewmar New Standard Portlight sizes

I have Bav44. Lewmar made some custom sizes for Bavaria’s I’m told. I have a PDF listing some, maybe all. Mine are on there.
My iPad stored the doc in ‘Files’ so I can email, but not attach here.
Happy to sent it if someone can tell me how, or I can email.

Re: Lewmar New Standard Portlight sizes

Read the last of your posts. Mine were leak8ng between the acrylic and the outside seal. Silicon grease lightly smeared around the edge softens the seal and mine have beeN good for another 4 years now. Just smear more on each year.
I’ll be looking at replacing mine soon. Think I’ll contact the ebay seller for that.
