Keep Tools from Rusting ?

How do you keep your wrenches, screwdrivers, hacksaw blades, and power tools, etc. from turning to rust?

I try to give my tools a shot of WD40 every once in a while and am wondering if I should be doing something different.

Thanks

Throw a camphor block in your toolbox.

I like LPS spray because it drys,, but it's getting harder and harder to find.
Soooo,,, WD 40.

Also use it when re-assembling nuts and bolts, and battery powered items like flashlights and underwater scooters on the electrical connections.

Used to use Neverseize on bolts,, but like the name suggests it NEVERSEZES to get all over you.

Gas-fitters tools are non-sparking, of some non-ferrous alloy. I have adjustable wrenches that I use on my salt water mooring work, that don't rust.
I also have screw drivers.
Stainless doesn't work. Once used on ferrous metal, the rust starts. Try LPS3 instead of WD40

Goose fat is excellent although unless you have a goose every so often, a bit hard to come by.

Lanolin - made from the oil found in sheep wool - either as a spray on liquid or as grease is great stuff for stopping rust

The problem with all these preventers is that they hold dust. However, they do indeed prevent rust. I'd rather the dust.

Periodically rubbing some tools with a cloth and Marvel Mystery Oil (rust inhibitor and smells like peppermint) can help slow the rusting.
Dust is dust but rust is rust and I'd rather have dust then rust.

With tool steel in the marine environment, it's gonna rust. The best you can do is slow the process. I spray and wipe with oily stuff, doesn't matter too much what, more important how often.

Spray them with Fluid Film. It contains Lanoline and other compounds. It was developed for the US Navy and works well. Even months later when there's no obvious sign of a coating. Spray them good, let sit for an hour, wipe off and put away.

Check out a product called Boeshield T-9. It leaves a layer of wax on your steel tools or locks and prevents them from rusting. Don't use on stainless though.

Re: Keep Tools from Rusting ?

Mine dont have time or a chance to get rusty, always on the go, day and night, in all weathers.
Like old friends we are, in fact the core of my spanners can date our partnership back over 30 years. Of course, some have gone AWOL over the years, some have been kidnapped by the thieves who lack the understanding of the ties that bind, some are now sadly dear departed and others are in semi retirement but always remembered fondly, sometimes taking a moment out to renew our memories of adventures past, places visited and recalling the scars which shall forever illustrate our lifelong allegience to one another.

May I propose a toast to our longest, our dearest. Friends and allies.

Let them never rust nor be forgotten

T-9 claims to be suitable for ALL metals; so why not S/S?

Re: Keep Tools from Rusting ?

Having had endless numbers of tools rusting, I've gone and bought some surplus ammo cans, which have a gasket and are water and air tight. I wipe the tools down with an oily rag, place them in the box and put in a few silica Gel packs. The packs are reuseable if you bake them. I bought a bin full of them from U-line.com which sells all sorts of packing materials n boxes n such.

Its much easier to keep the cans painted and rust free than it is to endlessly clean rust off tools.

Re: Keep Tools from Rusting ?

Has anyone ever used vapor rust inhibitors? One such is Moth balls. They, however, are toxic. There are non-toxic options I have seen at gun stores, etc. Has anyone ever used these on a boat?
