Re: Just say NO to Prop Speed!
Well, the soi disant "New" method is all marketing! It is a little roller "kit". Rather than the "traditional" method of using a brush.
Sure as heck not a change we're going to make!

Have a look at how I spelled "hard"

If you can't spell use the spell-checker (it is not hadr)

Re: Just say NO to Prop Speed!
Tried prop speed once, I didn't find it any better than using a primer and anti-fouling. I guess results may vary in different climates, but living in the tropics it was no better than alternatives.
I think they have done a great job with branding and promotion, so people are happy to pay the extra in both cost and time to apply - and then their identity becomes entwined with the product and they get very dogmatic about said product!
We do have the advantage of having a cat so we beach her ever 3-4 months and scrape the hull and props. We get 2 years between re-painting without issue. The boat does get used regularly which I suspect is one of the biggest factors.

I thought a lot about posts on this thread and decided there were so many diverse opinions I would do my own thing. I went through my paint stocks and found a Dulux etch primer suitable for SS, copper, wrought iron, aluminum, brass..... As far as the anti-fouling paint is concerned I'm not sure but I think I will try Altex No 5. which the manufacturer claims is a "multi season ablative' anti-foul paint"
Can I ask what anti-foul you used?

I have not tried this, but I'd try a hard antifouling for this. Ablative will not last long on a fast rotating item like a prop.

I thought the same, but while hunting for the cause of some paint adhesion issues on my running gear, I switched from Pettit Black Widow to Micron CSC on my props. Micron CSC is ablative, although it's a pretty hard ablative. I expected to see at least the prop tips showing wear, but at least in our application it doesn't seem to be an issue. There was probably more wear at the tips, but I didn't wear the paint off the props anywhere last year. We'll see if the same holds true this year.
For anyone who's curious about prop RPM and wants to calculate tip speeds or anything, we're turning 22" diameter props. At slow cruise (6.5 kts) the props are turning about 500 RPM, fast cruise (17 kts) is about 1250 RPM at the props.

You are probably right on the ball
It's getting late so I think Ill have a look at this highly relevant article in the morning. Cost will be one of the main deciding factors as I believe some of the products are just plain rorts

This has been our experience, with our folding props, as well. The paint takes itself off at the tips.
