Is this a reasonable price to paint a hull?

I recently purchased the 40 ft schooner shown below. She was berthed in Rock Hall MD. I had her shipped to my home area which is the Alabama gulf coast. She met almost all my desires, with the exception of having teak decks and a very dark green almost black hull. The decks however were replaced in 2005, with a very labor intensive but ingenious approach to completely eliminate potential leaks, so I'm good with those and they are beautiful. I knew that color in our heat would have to change at some point but had hoped to be able to wait a couple of years. I'm not sure I can wait. Today will be a high of 98 with 84% humidity.

This might be related to a strong economy but I got a price last week from a boatyard in our area and I was blown away. The estimate is $21,500! That's $538/ft! You will see in the picture that although 40 ft, she has considerable overhang on each end, and very little free board, thus not much surface for a 40 footer. Additionally the hull is in great shape so there is minimal prep work.

I realize there are regional influences on pricing, probably even regional supply/demand factors, but I hope to get some thoughts from you fine folks!

Re: Is this a reasonable price to paint a hull?

I think that's about expected for a quality paint job. I usually have any work done in the boatyard during the winter, may not be much cheaper but they are happier to see you and stuff gets done faster.

I can't think of anything that would help that, I'd faint.

Painting is expensive for sure. It's why people learn to tip and roll or find an independent to do it. Sail to Trinidad and have it done there.

That's a very pretty boat btw, I'd urge you to sail it for a few months before making any major changes. Just maintaining it in the current condition is going to create a lengthy "to-do" list.

Try Seabrook Marine in New Orleans.
I had the topsides (boot stripe to deck ) of my 40' ketch primed and painted with AWLGRIP for less than $8,000.....including all prep work.

Call Jeff Montz at 504-283-6001. I suspect that it will be worth your while to make the long day trip and get a truly professional job for a fair price.

From 2016 ... your estimate should include a detailed breakdown, so you can see any gouging.

even 11000 is too high. is only 40 ft.
boat floats and is buoyant. sail it to find what you need to do to and for it then haul in a reasonable yard not so greedy. best o luck to ye.

Re: Is this a reasonable price to paint a hull?

That's outrageous unless that is a wood hull which I am doubting.
$250-300/ft is a decent price for an awlgrip job. Extra for painting on boot and or cove strips/
I just had my mainship 40 painted here in Flag Blue at the South Texas yard 281-334-7245 for $13,000 including the stripes and a lot of fairing and repair work.

Plan it around off season nov-dec. It's TOO hot to paint now (in the south). They won't tell you that but you want to do it when temps are 80 max and 60 min.

Re: Is this a reasonable price to paint a hull?

That price seems high in my experience. My Hunter 46 was bottom painted last December with 2 coats, haul-out and prep work for ~$5000 by a local boatyard in the San Francisco Bay. I realize bottom anti-foulant painting rates may be higher outside my area.

Suggest getting competitive quotes from boat yards within a reasonable travel distance OR consider hiring a few guys and doing it yourself in a boatyard that will allow DIY's. My wife and I did all the prep work (taping and sanding) and applied 2 coats of paint of anti-foulant paint and changed the zincs on our first sailboat. If the boat requires epoxy barrier coat repair might have a boatyard do that and then you and your hired guys do the rest to save cost.

$500 bucks to cover the deck! I'd have to walk away from that one. Oh, just saw another $385 to remove the cover! Nuts.

What is the condition of the current paint/gelcoat on the hull? I seriously doubt that changing the color of the hull will make much/any difference regarding the interior temperature of the boat on a hot day.

Re: Is this a reasonable price to paint a hull?

Keep the paint. Put the money into a generator and a water cooled reverse cycle A/C system. Or if you are based in a slip with power, skip the generator Get cooling and heat if neccessary

Re: Is this a reasonable price to paint a hull?

Thanks to all of you. The suggestion of the yard in New Orleans is intriguing since in mid October I have a cruise planned there anyway. May sail there and then leave it to be painted. I also might paint her myself. I did a 23 footer 3 years ago that had major dock rash on both sides and a fair amount of crazing. Truth be told she probably had as much surface to prep/paint as my current one since she was so beamy. (see pics below) She came out great. I was super intimidated by doing it but ended up very pleased with the job. Ironically I painted her black, which is now what I want to get away from but she was more of a daysailer anyway.

Question to you with experience. Although it went great with the other boat, I went with one part paint. I'd rather do that again, but does two part dry harder and keep it;s gloss longer as it supposedly used to? Was that ever accurate? Have one part paints improved to where one shouldn't worry about it.
