I used dollar store epoxy on my boat. Will it sink?

Hi all,

I need some affirmation. What will happen to the piece of wood I glued with dollar store epoxy and painted with Minwax spar varnish?

Will it sink my boat? Will everything be ok? Will West Mxxx find out?

Cheers,
Phil

Dollar store epoxy is more expensive and more toxic but typically has about the same strength as marine epoxies.

I use Minwax spar varnish when I'm not using a two-part formulation like Perfection Plus. It works OK but is harder to apply because you have to sand between all coats.

What are you making? We cannot permit or forgive unless you confess...
If the wood is kept dry by the varnish and it's an above waterline accessory you will probably be OK.

The piece of wood will be fine. However, your boat will deconstruct totally due to a reaction between the polyester resin holding the fiberglass together and the non-marine amines in the dollar store product.

You personally are doomed. The varnished bit of wood will be found floating near the slick where your boat sank.

Pity you didn't ask for advice on CF before making such a fatal mistake.

Gadzooks - do you what you perpetrated with your un-nuanced actions? You may personally be responsible for the end of the universe as we know it.

Depends mainly on how well you did the repair. (whose epoxy, btw? LePage, Elmers, Gorilla, etc?)

In my experience, the 5 min epoxies usually work fine, if you mixed well and the surfaces were clean and dry. And that it was fully cured when you varnished.

Yes! I concur - how terribly unyotty buying boat supplies at a dollar store. There's a reason you never see any Helly Hansen in there

Re: I used dollar store epoxy on my boat. Will it sink?

YIKES, YOU DID THAT!
You better not have, but if you used it to patch a hole in the hull for your particular displacement you would need to keep an additional 12 adult lifejackets in the V berth as well as 4-6 more in the Lazarette. (remember to latch the Lazarette shut).
NOTE: these cannot be lifejackets you and your crew are wearing but additional unused ones.
Note: It's helpful if they are still in the sealed plastic bag from west --r--e.
In my calculations this should keep the deck of the 2900 Lb Tanzier above the surface regardless of current or future foolhardiness or multiple patches.

Results may vary.

It’ll go straight to the bottom the moment you’re in 50ft or deeper water. No question.

But seriously, most epoxies have very similar properties.

Have you fastened a cleat to the wood you epoxied to the hull? That might be the real test.

Re: I used dollar store epoxy on my boat. Will it sink?

I think you should be far more concerned about how they will treat you in the BYC clubhouse and whether or not the yard manager will consider this a violation of the eco-friendly policies of the BYC marina.

And with a large and devoted Tanzer fleet, how will this affect your rating? Will you even be allowed to race, or have you broken the class rules?

Now that the boat is contaminated with Dollar Store epoxy it may just be time to throw the boat in the bin and start fresh.

Probably-- but as you drown, you'll know you got a great deal.
