Hull Mounted Zincs
We have our fiberglass sailboat boat out for some maintenance and repairs and I'm changing all the zinc's. In addition to the zinc's on the prop shaft there are 2 Hull zinc's bolted through the hull in the engine compartment. The through bolts are not connected or wired to any ground source. Is this correct or should I be looking to ground these to the engine block or another location. Thanks

Re: Hull Mounted Zincs
What builder and model boat? Are you sure that these are not grounding plates?

1979 Contest built by Conyplex in Holland.
They are definitely zinc's. I also have grounding plates that are in good shape.

Re: Hull Mounted Zincs
They are useless if not connected to anything. Are your seacocks etc bonded to each other? Are you having much corrosion issues now? If not , I wouldn't change anything. Except maybe get rid of those hull zincs. Is it possible the PO clipped a ground cable to those only while the boat was in the marina?

Re: Hull Mounted Zincs
I suspect these anodes were used to bond thru-hulls, a controversial practice at best. If it ain't broke, don't fix it IMHO.

Re: Hull Mounted Zincs
So they were about 2/3 intact with the rest corroded off. They bolt through into the engine room but there aren't any wires that should be connected. The PO did replace the engine about 2 years ago and probably disconnected them at this time. Should I just ground them back to the engine block?

You won't be protecting anything if you do.

Re: Hull Mounted Zincs
If your boat lives in a marina and you are hooked to shore power, not a bad idea if you have a metal coupling to the prop shaft without a flex joint, otherwise your engine is not connected to the water anyway probably.
