HR352 Keel Construction Question

Calling all HR owners and technicians! Lol.

We had an HR352 surveyed the other day and while it was out I tapped along the keel (middle section, slightly below tanks) with my finger (yes I know this not correct, I was just seeing what I could find), and I noticed there were sections that give sound feedback similar to tapping on a rock would, and adjacent sections that sounded slightly hollow behind.

Normal?

Sign of mechanical separation between the fiberglass and iron?

All help appreciated,

Re: HR352 Keel Construction Question

I would expect the keel would have "ribs" inside the keel to keep it stiff therefore you would get different sounds along the keel.

Re: HR352 Keel Construction Question

I have an old (1979) Cal 39 MK2 shoal draft model which has an encapsulated lead keel. In this keel the lead is located in the forward 3/4 of the keel, and when tapping on the keel with a screwdriver handle or similar it's easy to tell where the lead is and where it isn't. Solid sounding in the front and hollow sounding in the rear. When this boat is hauled and blocked in the boat yard we are always sure to get the keel support blocks under the lead, a trick taught to me by a wise, not so old, boat yard guy.
