How worried should i be about this? damage between deck and hull
Just been to view this little Beneteau 210 1994
Noticed some cracking around this plate and some sealant port side.
There was an identical plate on the opposite side which was in rather better condition without messy sealant. i didnt take a pic as was much tidier
Anyone with the knowledge able to shed light? is the plate a repair both sides or are they likely original?
Many thanks in advance
J

Does not look that bad.
Always god to remove everything to see if any additional damage can be seen. You can grind the surface, over size drill the holes, filled with epoxy, re drill, and good to go. You an also consider a larger plate to further dispense the forces on the hull.

Re: How worried should i be about this? damage between deck and hull
Where was this plate located in the boat? Is it associated w/the standing rigging?
Hard to tell from the pic but it looks like someone added expanding foam for the coax wire drill through and it was spread around. Is the other plate like this also?

Yeah,
they are small cracks, maybe bit too critical
Its port side mid ship, the other side is fine.
it might be the shroud thinking about it?

No pic attached.
So if it is a chain plate, is the crack that you are noticing in the sealant of the hull deck joint or in the fiberglass itself.
You will need to do a closer inspection to see what is going on. Also are there details of the build of this particular boat (hull/deck joint, location of chain plates, etc.)
If they are chain plates, the shrouds should go to them.

How is the shroud attached topside.. D ring on deck.??? that does not look like a chain plate to me if, as it seems its on the deckhead/ceiling.

Re: How worried should i be about this? damage between deck and hull
To my eye....that stainless steel plate is not an original piece on this boat...just the shape of the plate.....the bolt/nut location, diagonally across the plate ??...(where is the bolt head located ??"...I notice the nuts have that plastic insert...curious about that too..
I see rust streaks and the yellowish shmear there.....there also seems to be some type of "black" filler behind the plate....
The bottom of the plate as shown on the above photo, does not fit flush with fiberglass either..
I also note, when I zoom into the pic, that there appears to be crack behind the plate..
But....there is a plate on both sides...interesting.....regardless, I don't think those plates are "original" pieces...just my 2c.....I think "someone" put them there for some reason.
Always hard to tell from just a photo.....but looks like a "repair" job of some kind, whether it is serious or not, hard to say without seeing the boat.

Re: How worried should i be about this? damage between deck and hull
As per boatie, that plate looks like the backing plate behind a U bolt or other anchor for a shroud. Our little boat has similar, and I upsized our backing plates; it's a common improvement.
Also, on a boat this small, repairs and improvements are relatively easy. I wouldn't turn down that boat because of what's pictured.
Maybe pull hard on the forestay and watch for deck flexing where the sidestays attach.

Re: How worried should i be about this? damage between deck and hull
When I zoom in on the first pic....boat in water.....I notice both the upper and lower shroud go to the same tang, no visible breakage in the toerail and there is no visible bolts (or anything else) protruding thru' that hull....even if the plate photo was rotated 90 degrees..ie, so that the plate would appear to be under the deck....that would be an unusual place for a chainplate backing plate.
There appears to be a fiberglassed beam of sorts under the deck, that stops short of the bulkhead..and what appears to be the edge" of round black hole underneath the bottom of the plate ( as shown in pic), which could have been a hull/deck bolt location...
Furthermore, I'm curious about the black square hole behind the plate..why is it there....could the actual chainplate backing plate be located there ???
So, the fiberglassed beam stops short of the plate, why can we not see the bolt location from the deck side....that would explain a lot, as we'd know where it is...could be that it is there as the beam does not extend to the bulkhead ??
I take back my original guess.....maybe it is there to take the place of the fiberglassed beam ?? That there is another on the other side would suggest that.
Jus throwing out ideas here.

Re: How worried should i be about this? damage between deck and hull
Thanks for all the input,
I've agreed to buy her as my first boat
Broker says they were re-bedded by the 'previous' - previous owner
Got lots of work to do to get her ship shape!

Re: How worried should i be about this? damage between deck and hull
Congrats on the boat PF. Please take and post some more pictures that better show the context ( zoom in on deck, zoom out in the cabin) and we will better see what you see.
On my 21 foot boat, both upper and lower go to the same chain plate, but the chain plate bolts to the side of the hull rather than through the deck.
When there is messy sealant, there is usually a leak that was repaired casually rather than thoroughly. Most likely some other bolt nearby that was not filled-drilled-bedded correctly at installation. This 'silicone goober' problem is also on my boat, and I have also seen it on RV's, and I am working through it.
Re-bedding the suspect deck fittings with new butyl mastic on the outside of the boat helped quite a bit but there are still some drips I need to find and fix with the full procedure which may involve some core repair as well.

Re: How worried should i be about this? damage between deck and hull
Those are really cool designs - congrats on your first boat! Looks like she's got an aftermarket bowsprit setup, for an asymmetrical spinnaker? As others said, a 21ft boat is going to be fairly straightforward and should be less expensive should it need any rigging repairs. Keep an eye on the area and re-bed any hardware that looks suspect. I always thought the First 21 looked like a tamed mini-transat - you should have a lot of fun!
