Re: How to secure books in their shelves?

Using battens in U-shaped brackets assumes you never get knocked down. Once your boat goes over 90° (or more), books and other stuff will go flying. How many boats are prepared for that eventuality? How many boat owners follow the Pardey's advice on storm preparing your boat? I know I haven't (yet!).

Can't quite agree with that, Bob. Our batten system will be secure through a 90 or even 180 degree roll. The battens are stiff, a tight fit in their sockets and will be additionally loaded with the force generated in a roll down.

Worst we've ever had (on our previous boat) was about 120 degrees. Books stayed put, lots of other stuff went flying. Poor stowage on our part, much improved after that event!

Interesting. Is your batten arrangement similar to the one shown in Painted Skies' photos? I would imagine that in a roll past 90° if any of the items on the shelf were to push against the underside of the battens these would start sliding out, no? For books probably not an issue, but say in a shelf with various loose items this would seem like a possibility. A barrel bolt on each side of the slide as what roverhi suggested should make it safer.

Jim
I'm thinking about how to make my cabin knockdown-proof. Will add installation of battens and barrel bolts to my todo list...

Here's a picture of a one batten bookcase with the brackets. You'll note that even if we were inverted, these books would not go awry because the overhead is so close to their tops. They're pretty snug in there.

Re: How to secure books in their shelves?

You're very welcome. It involved me having a lesson from Jim in how to do it. May take a few more before I really "get it", then watch out!
