How to determine what Bottom paint

The boat I just purchased which used for the last 15 years in freshwater. It is a sailboat. I’m wondering how to determine What type of bottom paint I can use over what is on the boat. Any ideas?

Re: How to determine what Bottom paint

First ask the previous owner what type of paint is currently on the boat. This will determine what you can or can't overpaint with.

If this is not possible, then determine whether it's a hard paint like VC-17, or an ablative like Interlux BottomKote -- both common freshwater paints. It's pretty easy to tell the difference. Ablative paint will slough off if you rub your hard firmly over the bottom. Hard paints won't (or not very much).

Most ablative paints can be painted over with other ablatives. You can't paint a hard paint over an ablative. My understanding is that you can apply ablative paint over some, but not all, hard paints.

Here's a table that claims to help sort out the various paths:

Whatever you do, make sure that you are 100% sure that the paint is compatible. A barrier coat is cheap in comparison to this mess I surveyed a few weeks ago.
Cheers

A big question for me... where do you intend to moor and sail the vessel? The location and water constituents make a difference with the paint that one selects.

Bearing that in mind, follow tried and true applications based upon local knowledge, and recommendations from this post and group.

Fresh water, marine environment, brackish, oceanic environment. ?
A lot goes into play as to the environment and how often you want the hull cleaned.
Cheers, happy sailing !
