Dimensional lumber is length by width, by height. The 3/4" applies to both the width and height, whether the length is 1' or 5' long. Think of it this way, the sides are equal, only the length is different.

A stringer does not have to have equal sides though...

O.K., I am Wrong. If you were to use fiberglass cloth and epoxy to attach a vertical strip of wood in the same manner as when constructing a stringer you'd basically end up with what you need.

But, the correct term is furring. Furring - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

I have been self corrected in response to the other posts.
