My boat's
interior has been treated with hard 2 comp PU
varnish. The surfaces collect scratches, no matter what you do. Shallow scratches do not penetrate the surface but turn white. Deep scratches enter the mahogany under the
varnish, too.
As an old wooden
boat owner I thought just some
sanding and revarnishing would be ok. But no. 2comp varnish does not melt into new varnish, and white scratches stay visible.
I think the only way to fix the shallow scratches is to polish the scratch and then apply new varnish (e.g. 1 comp PU), and buff the edges of the varnish. For deep scratches I have found a parquet fixing system where you use wood-coloured wax and melt it to the holes. I am not satisfied with this, as the outcome is not very nice, and wax does not seem to last long. Perhaps revarnishing over the wax would help.
What kind of systems do you use?
