help! rusty keel

Hi everyone. So I have a 1975 Catalina 22. I ran aground last season and now I've noticed some rust on the edges of my keel. I'll included some pictures. So I need to sand or grind the rust away, I get that part. But then what do I do? Do I fill it with thick end epoxy and paint over it? I don't know how to weld so filling it with metal or something else isn't possible I could really use some help.

Thanks

Re: help! rusty keel

Some rust on a cast iron keel isn't out of the norm and your first guess is about right: sand/grind the rust, prep/fill/sand until fair, and then paint.

It is important to apply the primer or epoxy barrier as soon as possible after grinding and sanding. The iron surface starts to oxidize immediately.

Re: help! rusty keel

Careful with a grinder unless you know how thick the material is you might go thru or make it to thin. Even if you are careful, you will be removing material you want to keep . Abrasive blast and 2 pot epoxy would be my advice. Also, abrasive blasting leaves a better surface for the paint stick.
