Help: internal fiberglass damage around keel

I'm new to sailing and searching for a boat to buy. I looked at a 1977 27' ericson today. Boat looks like it was well taken care of but I'm concerned about some fiberglass damage I saw around the keel. This is in the salon where there is a removable floor board to access the keel (forgive me for not knowing the terminology).

I'm guessing this is from a previous owner hitting the keel on something? Can anyone weigh-in please?

Avg value listed online for these boats is around 8-9k and owner has it listed for 16k which seems a big stretch given the damage.

Re: Help: internal fiberglass damage around keel

They're off by a couple of decimal points. $1,400.00 might be more than it's worth. If the keel hit something and got driven up at the aft end so as to crack the fiberglass shown, it looks like it might cost more like $14k just to fix.

Lucky you, fixing that (or living with it and worrying about it) is someone elses problem now. And it is good, that you took up the floorboard and looked!

Keep looking! Eventually, you will find a good solid boat.

It astonishes me that someone would actually buy that. Let alone at that price. I bet they didn't have a survey done. It looks particularly bad.

What they say about offers and acceptance might not reflect reality. Just a cheap way out...

Right?! They definitely did not have a survey done because the new buyer bought it only a couple days after it was posted. The sellers kept mentioning how they were in a rush to sell it and had other promising buyers

How long did it take you to find your first boat? I've been looking for months, the one above is the first I've gone to physically look at.

You are well out of it. They were waiting for a sucker and found one. Then there is the pressure on selling. Not nice at all.

The first one took months and many miles to see boats. It had to be wood. We basically learned about wooden boats by looking at several - and by reading. And then by repairing. By looking at several boats, you learn a lot and also get a feeling for the market.

After that, decisions were significantly faster, fiberglass, we pretty much knew what we wanted, looked at much fewer boats, but I am prone to some post purchase surprises, which means, that I should spend even more time looking at things. You never stop learning regarding what could be wrong on a boat.

I didn't visit many boats but I researched for about a year.

Yikes! I can't even get an offer on my O'day 27 "YOT" at $14,000. You know me as 25yearslater. https://forums.sailboatowners.com/th...begins.123244/
