Heat exchanger protection

The addition of an inline filter as attached between the water pump">raw water pump and heat exchanger I have found to be very useful
It prevents not only broken pieces of pump impeller from compromising the heat exchanger but also acts as a secondary filter to the sea strainer should this be compromised in any way.
Recently I discovered that I had a air leak on the suction side of the raw water pump caused by a hole in my freezer condenser.This was immediately apparent when I viewed the turbulence thru the clear view filter .
I am left wondering why these filters are not fitted as standard ,am I missing something here.

My thinking was backwards from yours. I try and always have good impellers so I put a fine screen before the pump. Thinking being, I'm saving wear on the pump vanes and cam. I have not seen any clogging from grass. The filter looks like yours, but bigger.

I don’t think your missing anything, I’m in the process of installing one myself after have an impeller come apart on me on a passage.
Of course it required disassembly of the heat exchanger to get all the impeller parts, in an anchorage, with no access to any parts and hadn’t checked in with Immigration yet either, and Seatow wasn’t an option. A concern was if a piece got through and plugged the one hole water flows though in the exhaust elbow, I’ve heard of that, but thankfully it didn’t happen to me.
The strainer I found is a lot larger though. I believe I’m going to hang it on the side of my heat exchanger “Yanmar”
Of course once the strainer is installed if an impeller ever comes apart again, I’ll just open the strainer and remove it, no disassembly of the heat ex required.
