Haulout looming

Hi,

Before I get sucked in with something that seems too good to believe I thought why not ask if anyone has used one of these with good results. Things cost 3X the price in USA here in Aus!!

Thanks Bill

Re: Haulout looming

Years ago I used a similar sized scraper without the vacuum on wood. The trick was to keep the blade sharp. There are many easier ways.

It's a scraper. The only difference is the vacuum to collect the debris. Sanding is messy, but allows you to use power rather than muscle, and produces a smooth finish ready for paint. I'd choose a random orbital sander with a vacuum connection over a hand scraper with a vacuum.

^^^^^^^
Agree w/above statement. It reminded me of an old school scraper w/ a vacuum attachment. Hard work and may work better on ablative than hard bottom paint. Everyone should try it at least once to appreciate/know how it works.
Depending on your bottom condition, a chemical stripper or vac. sander makes life much easier to get the bottom done, If a high build up of bottom paint, may start w/the chemical stripper to get the majority of paint off, followed up w/some sanding.
If you get a vac. sander try to get a better one that has some power and variable speed settings. There are many cheaper, feeble disc sanders being sold these days and we now like a 5" Porter Cable. Has plenty of power and a good vac. attachment.

Haulout looming

That looks like hell. Imagine it overhead on the hull

Re: Haulout looming

Overhead is a big issue for me. When I bought an orbital sander I went for a 5” Bosch due to weight. For basic #80 sanding to give a tooth, it seems okay. I’ve seen others using bigger sanders. One factor I didn’t consider was that with a vacuum it provides a bit of assistance keeping it close to the hull so maybe a heavier sander would not have been too bad. In hindsight renting one from Home Depot or somewhere else would have been a good idea to test it out.
