Gobius 4 for Metal Fuel Tank Gauge

I would like to add a diesel fuel level sensor to my metal fuel tank, but up until this week, the only tank monitors I've seen for metal tanks require holes to be drilled.

Enter the 'Gobius 4', which claims to use sound waves to knock on the side of the tank in order to estimate the fill level. As a result, the product claims to be the "the first level indicator in the world that measures from the outside" for metal tanks. Unfortunately, it's priced high for the early adopters -- around $350 when ordered from their UK distributor (Digital Senders and Gauges).

Is this product really my only option, aside from drilling a hole and installing a float? Any other suggestions? Any handy (even non-electrical) tricks would be appreciated! The boat is a Sabre 28 sailboat with the fuel tank directly under the cockpit -- and the fill in the middle of the cockpit. Hard to crawl under and rap on the side!

Best,

Dr. C.

Doc,

I've used a Hart Tank Tender (for fuel tank and water tanks) for 15 years now without a problem. Uses air pressure .. no floats or electricity involved. Wonderful people to deal with!
The Tank Tender - by Hart Systems, Inc.

Good luck, Bill A.

Thanks for the idea -- although for a single tank application, this does suggest that $350 for the Gobius isn't too bad of a price.
