getting ready for some boat repairs

Here I'm again. First lots of questions about what boat to get. Now that I got the boat I will have even more questions on maintenance and repairs.
Over all the boat is in good shape. three things I need to do to start.

first I want to go over the engine and make sure everything is taken care of maintenance vise so I have a starting point.
Second the big job I need to completely re-bed the stanchions.
Third need to repair or replace the head sail.

Any YouTube videos you would direct me to that show a proper and easy to follow step by step of re-bed of the stanchions and deck hardware.
What is the opinion of the marine how to website?

Is his Butyl tape better, would you recommend it?
What resin would be recommended to purchase to repair the soft spots and core repair?

Hope by the time I'm done i would know what I'm doing a little more then now.

OK, fireant. Start with some reading. Get Nigel Calder, and learn more about boat and engine maintenance. That'll help you bootstrap your way up into really understanding your boat.

Then, starting with your engine: Run through it from one end to the other. It needs air, so the filter, it needs fuel, so the tank, hoses, and filter(s). It has a cooling system, so coolant, hoses, heat exchanger, and seacock. It needs to start, so battery, alternator, wiring, and starter itself. So on, until you reach the condition of the propeller.

Then choose a new system (steering, navigation, safety, standing rigging, running rigging, spars, sails... Pretty soon, you have systematically covered the entire boat, you know it really well, and you know that it is ready to go.

I'm going to recommend that within the time you have available you not jump forward to speciffic tasks such as the deck softness, not that doesn't need attension, but that you'll know more about how to tackle rotting core with liquid resin when you get there, and many of your systematic reviews will take only hours - most of your boat doesn't need anything, just review to find what it does need.

You mention the headsail, repairing a newer sail that was mistreated and damaged makes a lot of sense. Repairing a 15-20 year old sail that won’t perform is a waste. We have had our boat 20 years and have replaced the main and genoa twice. Each time the sail looked good but didn’t perform going to weather. A new sail is something that many owners put off and put on many engine hours waiting for the right conditions for their blown sails to give them joy. Just my highly opinionated view.

tkeithlu, The boat over all dont need much. A few small things and two larger things.
Cant wait to bring it in the new marina and start to enjoy the boat and learn to sail.

Boatpoker, I also find that his explanation is very easy to follow. Its great to your opinion about the website, never know how good the info on the net.
Ordered 3 rolls of Butyl tape from him as we expect to redo all the deck hardware.

I never hear anyone use linseed oil. Is there a reason it wont work on the boat?
I been using on wooden knife handles, even made a cane for my dad that came out amazing and the wood is hard like a rock after the treatment.
Waiting for weather to clear out so we can move the boat to the new marina.
