Galled Standing Rigging?

After taking apart my lower shroud turnbuckles, it seems that the T bolt threads have very worn threads. There was a black kind of grease in there, which I assume is just metal shavings in the previous grease.

What should I do? I was hoping just to clean them up and put lanacote on them, and hope for the best. However, I have never seen worn threads before. Does anyone have any experience with this?

Re: Galled Standing Rigging?

Way back before The Great Ozone Hole Disaster, you could get Tapmagic or Tapmatic with chlorinated fluorocarbons in them. Just dribble it down the s/s threads and force them apart, no galling. (We used lots of 3/8 s/s hardware on RF transmission lines, and the iron workers liked to prove their manhood by over-torquing then.)
Does anybody know anything else that would work like this?

Anytime you are joining stainless to stainless galling can occur so it's best that a good lube be used.
That said I'd carefully check the threads again as usually it's very hard to gall a long thread.
If the thread is the same top to bottom I'd be very surprised if it had been galled.

Re: Galled Standing Rigging?

The thread is much thicker at the top, where the turnbuckles are not screwed onto the t bolt and swage thread fitting.

Re: Galled Standing Rigging?

Replace the threaded element. Keep the barrel part, if it is bronze.
