Follow-Up to 'Building an Ice Box' - Built !

hey guys (and gals)
this is a follow up to a post of mine back from back in june in which i inquired about the best way to build and ice box, from scratch. see:http://www.cruisersforum.com/forums/...box-26977.html
well i couldnt have done it without your help, and heres how it went.

i got 4 4x8 sheets of the 1" dow blue board, r value - 5, i took very careful measurements of the big empty space i had to work with (pic 1) and proceeded to make a jigsaw puzzle with the pieces, all the joints are staggered, as i read that was best. 4 four by eight sheets and very little waste gave me a 3.5 cu ft. box with 5 layers on the bottom (5"), 4 on the sides and top (4") and 6 along the back, total r value = mid/low 20's. when i had all of the pieces cut and fit i glued each panel together (bottom, sides, back, top). i first used thickened epoxy for the bottom but realized that was over kill and way to much work and did the rest with heavy duty spray ahesive and weighed them down real good. once i had the panels made i dry fit them again. once they all fit perfect i epoxied down the bottom, sprayed ahesive foam in all he cracks and installed the front, back and sides. cut an opening out of the top but left it off for a while, after i cleaned up all the excess foam i made a fiberglass liner by pulling pieces from a flat mold. epoxied these in, built shelves, installed a drain, and painted.

meanwhile with the top off i cut an opening, glassed the opening and underside and glassed the lid. once that was done i did the same thing, spray foam in the gaps and put top on, epoxy fillet where top meets side. after that it was alot of detail work on the lid, making the counter top and making her pretty.

ohh yea, i did all of this with the boat on the hook.
enjoy the pictures

Ben

Looks good indeed. Keep the foam dry and that sure looks easier without holes for the evaporator lines, thermostat sensor etc.!

cheers,
Nick.

Yes, it takes a lot of time. I took 3 months to build our system with three boxes (!!) and three compressors, three keel-coolers etc.

ciao!
Nick.

Wow! She is looking great! Have you plumbed in a head yet? I would LOVE to see more pictures of the old girl. I am doing the same with my newest boat, a 1973 Gulfstar 44 Ketch. The Crackertail handled like a dream but was too small for my family. Ray

Ben, do you still own the Crackertail? I found some Yanmar manuals and other assorted stuff for her and can swing them by if I head south.
