Didn't consider suction cups, but did consider embedding rare earth magnets for similar effect. But decided to go with something simple instead.

My observation of boaters' (including mine) habits is that if it is hard to open up, it won't get opened up on a regular basis. And might be hard to open up in an emergency if tools are required. Get something as easy as possible to open up, preferably without tools. The bilges should be checked regularly. My boat has panels that are too long and awkward. I am considering cutting them to make it easier. FWI....
