Re: Epoxy and teak. Will it work?

I have glued a lot of teak with a lot of different glues. If I have zero gap fits, I'd prefer resorcinol, but if the fit was any less than perfect, epoxy works great. Entire cold-molded boat hulls have been built of teak and epoxy. Follow directions exactly. Trust the glue manufacturer WAY more than anything you read onthe internet.

Wait... aren't you the guy who dies if he comes within 100 yards of uncured epoxy? I thought we were not even allowed to mention the word in one of your threads?

Interesting because the manufacturers actually put their directions on the Internet. I don’t understand why that would not be good to trust?

Attached the instructions from West System. You will find that they are exactly as I posted. Even when using different brands of epoxy, the same instructions are valid.

Yes.

Some chain plates need to be made from epoxy next week and these can be stuck on at the same time.

I won’t be at the boat during that process

Agreed. That’s what I had in mind as well. I would also epoxy this job, on top of the cleaning I would abrade both surfaces to ensure a good mechanical bond.

Re: Epoxy and teak. Will it work?

You MUST use dry cleaner as acetone, or better, MEK (methyl ethyl cetone) because acetone provided from reseller is very often recycled and can be a little greasy.

Apply glue, epoxy or, better IMHO, PU (polyurethan) glue, specially on teack.

I read that you are allergic to epoxy...

Wash with a cloth soaked in cleanser and if possible, rinse with the same cleanser directly after washing with the cloth, wait at least 15 minutes for the cleanser to evaporate completely.
Apply the PU glue as directed by the manufacturer.
Vinylester is not a glue for teack.

Re: Epoxy and teak. Will it work?

While building my boat...on a whim, I took a piece of steel bar, brushed the rust off, and coated it with a some WEST epoxy. I tied the bar to a piece of string and left it dangling in some tidal salt water. About a year later, I retrieved this bar, brushed the slime off and it looked like the day I dropped it in there. That WEST is amazing stuff.

To further this story. I had also built a small wooden dink with mahogany wood and plywood, using WEST. The WEST was sanded and the dink painted. After some years, the paint started to fade and peel off, but the WEST continued to protect the wood.
I simply can't see a problem using wood epoxy.

Re: Epoxy and teak. Will it work?

You can use a wood penetrator on teak. Then it’s pretty much a plastic with wood fibre. I 3D print teak with 20% actual wood. Terrible darn thing to do to teak. Most woods have oils to reject glue. Teak and cedar are top notch at it. Anything which will stick to them will tear out chunks once removed.
Level will stick to teak and if it’s dry tear it apart.

Epoxy and teak. Will it work?

I glued down a hand fitted Burmese teak deck 20 years ago. I used Sika PU sealant adhesive. The key is to use the Sika primer /catalyst

I was on the boat last year. The deck still was perfect. No screws anywhere

And yes I wiped down with lab grade acetone

Re: Epoxy and teak. Will it work?

I notified the use of PU glue because, in case of allergy, it can replace epoxy.

Chotu said : Epoxy can kill me like a kid smelling peanuts across the lunch room. Even the freshly machined dust from cured epoxy. Please don’t suggest using it.
