Question Engine compartment insulation

There are many options any particular type and thickness that works well?

Re: Engine compartment insulation

A very good one. You’ll want cartridges rated for toxic dusts. And it is REALLY important to make sure it fits. The most expensive respirator is worthless if you are breathing air that leaks past the face seal.

If you have significant facial hair you really need a positive pressure air supplied model. Reliable sealing with a beard is impossible.

They are probably the only lungs you will get. Take care of them.

Re: Engine compartment insulation

Soundown’s “TuffMass” Mass Loaded Vinyl insulation has, both, sound blocking and vibration damping.
https://soundown.com/product-category/tuffmass/

In the diagram below, TuffMass provides the acoustic barrier, which is sandwiched between a 4-inch fiberglass decoupler layer and 2 inches of acoustic absorption material. This highly effective treatment will block almost all airborne noise transmitted out of the engine room.

We’re just doing this job now on a 45’ catamaran using one of the “Soundown” products and I can guarantee there’s no way we could or would use 6” of insulation , the space in the engine compartments is large in surface area but small in volume due to various engine or system related devices so using a product with the thicker mass sheet layer as originally planned would have been too heavy overall, difficult to attach and support on the fairly large overhead areas. The machinery is relatively quiet with zero insulation, the original stuff fell apart some time ago, re doing it is more about being able to keep the boat cooler as well as a bit quieter. So the “Soundown” is 1” thick fireproof foam with a surprisingly tough silver foil skin and a quite thin layer of the dense material ..... not the perfect solution, but the compound curves and weight considerations voided the better choices. The cost saving was substantial but not a consideration at the time of purchase. ( we budgeted for the thicker heavier sheet but just couldn’t use it).
