Deck to thick for pedestal guard mounts?

We tried to install our new pedestal guard today, only to realize the bolts on the Edson mounting hardware are too short. The bolt barely makes it through the cockpit deck.

I can’t seem to find anything online about people running into this issue. The only idea i have thus far is to remove about .75” from the bottom of the deck directly below where the hardware would mount, install a backing plate, epoxy the hell out of it, re drill and mount the hardware through the now thinner but hopefully stronger deck.

To he honest, I don’t particularly like the sound of this plan, so I’m hoping someone on here has an idea I haven’t considered yet.

Why don't you get longer bolts as Ted says?

You would be able to unscrew the existing threaded stud from the 'foot" and insert a longer threaded stud.





Or use a stud extender (maybe I don't understand the problem)

A longer bolt sure would be an easy fix, but the bolts don’t seem to come out of the hardware. If I could get them out, some threaded rod would solve the problem. Here’s a picture of the hardware just for clarifications sake

Maybe I didn’t torque on them enough to get them free. I was trying not to mar the threads, but at this point, they’re not doing me any good so I might as well put some vice grips on em.

It won't do any harm at all if you bugger up the thread near the foot


If you go to an automotive repair workshop they might be able to use a stud extractor tool

As I have been completely rebuilding our boat over the the last two years I have had to address this issue many times over. I removed any and all deck fittings such as cleats, chain plates, winches, clutches, stanchions, hatches, portlights, windlass, mast step, strongpoints,......etc etc etc. Since I fabricated and installed G10 backing plates for nearly all deck hardware this resulted in most of the fasteners being too short. Most of them were easily solved with new and longer 316SS fasteners. Some, such as all the grab rails had the studs welded directly to the bottom of the rail. Easiest solution was to purchase the right diameter bolt, obviously plenty long, then I cut off the old stud as well as the head of the new and longer bolt. Then welded the new longer fastener to the bottom of the grab rail mount. Any local welder can do this work in a short period of time for what should be a reasonable fee. Since my hardware was all 316ss I used 316ss fasteners as well as 316ss rod when welding on the new fasteners. Clearly you could also use all thread and just cut the length pieces you needed to weld on. Last step was a little polishing with a Dremel and some rouge to remove the heat signature marks form the welding process.

Not sure of your tube dia. on the guard, but believe it's 1".

We had a similar situation and just used 1" stanchion bases instead (like these). Then you can use any length of screw.
The other way is get longer bolt or studs in the Edson bases. If they sell longer ones, you should be able to get them out. As suggested call, Edson and ask how to get them out if you are having difficulty.
I doubt the threading is anything special and you should be able to replace them w/o paying the higher price Edson is asking.

I called Edson this morning, apparently the package was supposed to come with longer replacement studs. Mine did not, but I just grabbed some threaded rod that should do the trick.
