Re: Cost for putting Name and Hailing port on hull
Pat,
We got our lettering online from Boat US
https://www.boatus.com/products-and-...boat-lettering
I think it was about $100 for 3 names + hailing port. Easy to follow instructions and cheap enough to replace after 5 yrs. Lotsa design options.

Re: Cost for putting Name and Hailing port on hull
that $650 quote may have been for a painted name.
I had that done once, a paint job, I can't recall the cost, it was only the name and home port on the transom...but it was in the $250-300 range if memory serves me correct...so two names on both hulls.....yeah....I can see the $650 quote...for a paint job....
the name on my boat was done in a gold leaf type of paint with a black outline...very nice....but this was also before the advent of the internet.

Re: Cost for putting Name and Hailing port on hull
I am also in San Diego and just got my boat 'renamed' with port and name on the transom and also on the both sides of the boom. I have a great company that I worked with and was all in for $400. They did the design and install and were great. I think you could get it done a little cheaper, but depends if you have the time and want to DIY. Send me PM if you want the name of company and my contact there.

Some options:
- Buy the custom-cut letters in vinyl for $100, and hire a high school kid with some art talent to apply them for $50
- Give an artistic relative $100 to hand letter the names and port.
- Hire an old school sign painter to do the lettering by hand. You'd get a work of art for $400.
- Hire a grafitti artist. You could get something really cool for $600

Paint around them?

To do the job properly you wold have to remove them, paint, and then apply new ones.

Re: Cost for putting Name and Hailing port on hull
Vinyls were around £40 ($50 US) from a local print shop. I did the design in Photoshop and emailed him the files. Applied them myself which was tricky because of the font but not difficult. Took me about an hour using slightly soapy water and a squeegee (old credit card!). Still have to apply the hailing port, when I can get to the marina (lockdown for the past two weeks - probably another four as well )

I used http://diylettering.com a few years back. Cost less than $50 for lettering and installed myself following their instructions.

Re: Cost for putting Name and Hailing port on hull
Do the Boat US letters come pre-positioned on a sheet or do they come as individual letters that one has to position with the proper spacing on the hull?
I could probably manage getting a sheet of letters more or less straight but forget getting 7 letters to look right. I'm doing good to write my name with a pencil on a line. :<)

Re: Cost for putting Name and Hailing port on hull
I designed the vinyl and had a company cut the lettering out. It came in a drawing tube. The lettering design followed a shallow arc in order to fit onto my stern name board. The lettering was sandwiched between two release layers, so all I had to do was pull off the boat side release and lift the entire sheet up to the boat and start pressing down the letters with a credit card, chasing out the bubbles and getting a good tack. The second release layer kept the spacing and the arc while the letters were burnished down. When all the letters were attached, I pulled off the second release layer. Easy peasey.
Installation was easy and quick. I don't remember what the lettering cost but since I gave them a drawing of what I wanted with dimensions, I got exactly what I wanted. The lettering has been on the boat for 25 years and still looks good.
I wanted to mention that a good source of the vinyl lettering are companies that put lettering and graphics on semi trucks and trailers. They have the correct sign material and can cut out anything you can define.

They come on a sheet, with a backing sheet, prepositioned.
It was really easy, and I can't even hang a picture right.

Re: Cost for putting Name and Hailing port on hull
Thanks Coopec, I did go to Youtube but somehow missed the Boat US video. I got the Island video but missed the Boat US, and my query was specifically about what they offered. I couldn't find how the letters were delivered on their site. It would have been nice if they had included a sentence simply stating "the decal will be delivered pre-spaced on a sheet".
Sorry for my oversight.

Re: Cost for putting Name and Hailing port on hull
The lettering/shapes are cut from a roll of vinyl (You select the color and size/style of font)
The vinyl has adhesive on the back which is covered by wax paper. You can easily see the lettering so you can line it up (I used cellotape to hold it in position temporarily until I was happy that it looked good).
