Why on earth would you hire someone who is a 2hr drive away?
Because sometimes that’s all that’s available. For instance I would have to move our boat 90nm just to have it mechanically serviced let alone decals.

The OP is in San Diego...I doubt it's the only option within 90miles

90 miles was an example. You assume the boat is in SD. OP needs to offer yon more info or it’s all conjecture.

Re: Cost for putting Name and Hailing port on hull

If you use a local sign shop check what sort of vinyl they're using. A close friend owns a sign and lettering shop and recommended the route we went since the material he felt should be used wasn't something he stocks for commercial lettering and signs.

https://www.funkymonkeyboatnames.co.uk/

They gave me to sets of the lettering "Skylark" and "East Hampton, NY"

I think it was around 100 bucks or less. Good quality vinyl.

5 letters, 2 sides, $20. Applied myself. The old name still visible beneath because of UV fading of the hull. The hardest part was scraping off the old name.

I've put new name decals on 3 of my boats. Its a little more tense when applying a big font.

FWIW, the name is from The Shipping News, by Annie Proulx.

Fancy vinyl lettering, hailing port will be added, along with cove stripe. Couple hundred bucks US.
As the photo shows, Kerrie liked it!

Re: Cost for putting Name and Hailing port on hull

I paid $100 and change for two vinyl boat names (about 8” tall) for port and starboard quarters on a monohull. I got one side perfect, the other had a few bubbles (working alone: a second pair of hands would have been welcome). So if you demand perfection in an install like this, perhaps it’s worth the quoted price? Bet they’d agree to do it for $500 if you asked nicely.

Is the price for paining instead of applying vinyl? Is it possible that that would explain the difference?

From the original post: Is this a reasonable price (in San Diego CA)?

The OP did provide the info.

Re: Cost for putting Name and Hailing port on hull

I designed myself in Illustrator. Sent the file to a vinyl printer and got it back in a tube. Less than $100

I took my time to lay it out perfectly. Do NOT do it on a windy day...

Check out any of the "Custom vinyl boat lettering" companies on the internet. You can design it however you like - and it comes in a one-piece strip with a clear backer, that spaces all the letters perfectly. I've bought 3 different letterings over the past 2 years, and was very happy with the costs, and outcomes. I'd also check for coupon codes - there's usually a discount.

Re: Cost for putting Name and Hailing port on hull

$650???!!! You could buy quite a decent tender for that.

The name of my boat, Petrel, was painted onto the stern in two colours, but it was fading. So I traced it, scraped the old name off and took the tracing to my local vinyl shop. They made an almost exact replica for about £40 – c $45. A friend helped me to fix the new vinyl on.

In the UK there are online vinyl shops for boat names. Isn't there something similar in the USA?
