Coronado 35s and World Cruising

Hello all, I was just wondering if anyone had any advice as to what kind of modifications I would want to make with a Coronado 35 to make it as good of a blue water boat as I could get it? I am getting the boat from a family friend and would like to take it around to world in about three years. Also I was wondering about the "H" joints that join the hull and deck together, I was wondering how they fared in rough weather. Any current or previous Coronado owners opinions would fantastic!

I wouldn't think that the Coronado 35 would make a very good circumnavigator.

Thanks Gordmay, While I know its not an ideal candidate, I am getting the boat very very cheaply and the boat might as well be brand new.

Did you have a look at the links Gord posted...one of them is from a guy who made substantial structural improvements by filling the void between the two skins with Poly urethanes.....a good read.

Yes I did James, I think that is a very good idea and had thought of doing that myself, I am currently looking into how well the different foams resist being waterlogged. I have heard horror stories about boats with foam getting water logged and the boat weighting a full ton more after years of leakage into the foam.

i have a 41 coronado bigger version of the 35. and for the most part they are solid but just like any vintage boat they will need refitting. give the hull below the waterline a good look its balsa cored which isnt a bad thing as long as the previous owner didnt improperly install/seal through hulls or penetrate it for any reason. these boats usually have soft spots on the side decks due to leaky coaming boxes/ holes that drain into the end grain balsa. not a difficult repair, just finished repairing mine. inspect the keel bolts if original there probally in bad shape. i dont believe there was many problems with the h- joint all the columbias used them too. if it has a palmer you will want to upgrade to a diesel. if it has the albin diesel the parts are hard to find and expensive i heard. there is some negative comments about coronados dont believe the armchair bashers. theres a ton of them still sailing mine has crossed the pacific and cruised all through the carribean to the north atlantic. if shes not in bad shape you could easily put some work into her and have a great cruiser.

Great to hear bunyipdreaming! I will definitely check out the keel bolts. The motor is a brand new yanmar so I am all set there.
