Conversion of Hunter 26 centerboard to fix keel

Dear All, I am new to sailing and had my centerboard housing cracked during running aground. I am considering converting the centerboard to fix keel as I have no need to trail the boat. Would like to know your thoughts.

In most situations wouldn't make any sense costwise even if you had reasonable DIY skills and plenty of spare time. I've heard stories of people recasting keels for different configuration but in all of those situations they were themselves marine pros with experience and with enough marine pro friends around to help for the cost of "drinks for all" and keep the labor costs negligible.

My concern is the crack is moving upwards. The centerboard is acting like a massive screw driver opening the crack and is moving upwards. Water is leaking into the water ballast area. My fear is that it might move higher than the ballast level and into the bilge. How do you repair an area subjected to high transversal load?

Get her out of the water and get a verified pro to look at her . Depending on year, damage and your wallet, it may have been the grounding rendered your boat better off not repaired. And start with another vessel. Changing to fixed keel is not a job for a novice.

The boat is 20 years old. I had a surveyor look at it and conclusion is it cannot be repaired. Only other option is to convert if I wish to keep the boat which leads me to this forum. I am not sure whether any of you guys ever done it successfully. I intend to send it to a yard if there is a hope of doing it.

I don't accept this. Let's see some clear photos. Changing to a fixed keel should be way more expensive than fixing this. And if you are running aground with a centerboard, it won't get any better with a fixed keel.

Let's see what it would take to repair it.

You can repair a boat cut in half, just depends on how much money you have. Talk to the repair facilities. Many of them, they will usually give a free estimate. Check areas outside of your area as well. Sometimes it's better to travel a few hundred miles to get a job done for half the price.

Thank you all for your respond. I manage to get a repair facility who claim they are able to do the repair. I will update in the future. For now, I will try this out. Once again, thank you for your suggestions.
