Mold gnats have nothing to do with the media you use. It has everything to do with how effective/quickly you are drying the solids.

Some think that it is about media contaminated with eggs and go to great lengths to decontaminate.

On the few occasions that deposits have gotten ahead of the drying and the mold and gnats show up, it has been a non-issue.

I am about to quit wasting keystrokes here, because I can’t help notice that people gravitate to complicating the simplicity of what these systems should be.

If you want to hear more, ask.

I’m sorry, what? I’m a huge proponent of a desiccating head. I have one. I love them. I think you took whatever post i made wrong.

Re: Compost toilets

Finally.

Don't you hate when you anchor in a beautiful place in space, put on your spacesuit and go for a spacewalk and the friggin spaceship next to you empties their holding tank in this pristine part of space directly into your faceshield?

They are probably running their loud ion-whatever-generator all night for their air-conditioning.

Re: Compost toilets

I don't yet have a composting toilet but after having to remove the previous owner's stinking, leaking, vomit inducing conventional head I figure there's no way a composting system can be worse. Being able to eliminate two through-hull fittings is an added safety bonus

I just wish I knew how effective the urine separator on the Air Head is as it's an obvious issue for women.

Re: Compost toilets

It works well and I like how it is easy to remove the tank to dump it.

Re: Compost toilets

Speaking of urine tanks, anyone have any ideas as to what would make a good urine pump?

I’m thinking of making a bit of a larger urine tank for weekly dumping.

About 5 gallons

Totally not a problem on our boat.

If there is high concern keep the bomb bay door closed until mission critical.

I’ve seen a guy using a 5 gallon portable gas tank.

Between this gem and the advice about the forward under-bridge deck ventilation tubes, I think I owe you big. Thanks! Love the off the shelf idea to using a gas tank and it has all the right hazardous materials warnings already on it. Ha ha.

Not to mention the pickup hose doesn't care what way the liquid is flowing.
The check valves are in the primer bulbs
