Carrying enough for several years for a family of 4 would be an issue anyway. i need to empty it every 2 weeks.

I am expecting that we will sometimes dump it overboard. Many of the places we are visiting have absolutely no garbage collection so it's either that or burying it.
I would then suggest contacting the New Caledonia embassy or one of their many consulate offices

Re: Compost toilets

There's some great ideas in these replies. Thank you very much everyone! I'm feeling less worried now. I might just buy a little trowel and collect a bucket full of whatever I can find. Leaves, sawdust, kitty litter, coconut etc etc. I'm sure we can find something! And yes talking to the officials in New Caledonia is a great idea too.

Re: Compost toilets

This is an excellent attitude toward this problem. The biolitter concept is not rocket science, nor is it particularly difficult to make or find.

When we were cruising in the Bahamas 20ish years ago, there was sufficient debris under the scrub trees on the uninhabited islands to cycle a sawdust toilet. Although, at that time the Bahamas were not a no-discharge zone and everyone pumped directly overboard. I was not schooled on the benefits of compost (biolitter) toilets.

Enjoy your cruise.

Re: Compost toilets

May be a stupid idea but Harbor Freight sells an angle grinder disk that has chain saw teeth on it. If your boat has an angle grinder, probably not a bad thing to have aboard, you could grind up all the sawdust (biolitter) you wanted to from coconut husks or driftwood, etc..

Woah that's a scary looking thing! Not a bad idea though. I have a circular saw on board. Kind of a hassle taking the generator and tools to the beach but it's possible.

Re: Compost toilets

For those crazy (smart) enough to try the chain saw grinder, there is a video to show how it works. I guess it would depend on how bad one needed sawdust (biolitter) for one's toilet.
