combining varnish

I have a few cans of varnish that I would like to strain and combine. Is this a bad idea?

One is a can of Jamestown quick coat varnish
some Epiphanes rapid coat
some Schooner Gold
and some minwax spar varnish with urethane

Could I combine these to make a full quart?

Would you use this for a top coat, just as though it was new varnish?

Would you instead use it for utility items like oars, centerboard or ruddr on dinghy, shroud rollers of ash, etc?

Thanks
Christian

Re: combining varnish

I don't know but I think it could end up being a mess unless they all had the same ingredients. But I'm just guessing. Maybe try it in some less obvious part of the boat?

Re: combining varnish

Can’t say I have tried it. I am just imagining it all peeling of in a few months time.
When you mix the wrong thinners with some paints it goes all lumpy. So who knows what could happen with the varnish?
Cheers

Re: combining varnish

I wouldn't mix different varnish

What I do if I want to stop anything in the backyard rusting is to go to the recycle facility at the local rubbish dump where I can pick up a liter of paint (or varnish?) for a couple of dollars.

Re: combining varnish

Except for the Jamestown quick coat, for which I couldn't find an MSDS, you probably can, as they all are primarily naptha and aliphatic hydrocarbon based.

Not sure what you'd get though...

Re: combining varnish

Given the investment in time to apply and maintain varnish, the idea of saving a few bucks by mixing old cans of varnish strikes me as pennywise and pound foolish.

Buy new varnish.
