Columbia 40 - Center Board

Hello,

I've been looking at a Columbia 40, 1965. There are a couple of issues with the boat, the starboard chain plate is weeping rust through the fiberglass and the toe rail / deck hull connection seems to to be leaking quite badly. other than this the boat seems to be in reasonable condition The issue that concerns me most though is that the center board opening has been glassed over and the drop down keel can no longer been used.

Does anyone have any experience with these boats and whether the sailing performance is going to be affected with increased leeway.

But the i read on the sales brochure.


"The Columbia 40 may be the only model that used a steel skeleton to reinforce her hull and - more importantly - spread the load of the shrouds. Here is Columbia's explanation from the Columbia News, Spring, 1965".
