Found someone that will powder coat all my old black hatches but he wanted them all at once. So these are my custom built temp hatches. Aluminum suretape and 55 gal trash bags.

Haha, that would be quite the surprise! I hope to have them back and reinstalled by the time anyone else is on the boat again. Maybe next weekend, if the rain gods cooperate.

Are your old hatches cast aluminum. If so, your in for a surprise.

They are cast aluminum. What kind of surprise! I hate surprises. Is it the out gassing issue? What is that exactly, anyone know?

Out gassing! Correct!
Cast aluminum is porous. When you heat it up (390º F) to cure the powder coating is gasses and leaves small pits in the surface.

I had a large 32" hatch done and is was pitted everywhere. The coaters said "your choice, not our problem".
But I resolved it by using a corse scothbrite pad and roughing the glaze off and then painted it with a Interlux Boot Stripe paint, which is tough stuff. This filled in all the pits and has held up for the past 4 years, so far. If I chip the edge, I just touch it up with more paint.

So far, so good!

My ports and hatches were cast aluminium and I tried powder coating. It gassed and was full of bubbles. Had to immerse in paint stripper for a week to remove the coating, luckily I did only one to try.
I had them painted with aircraft-spec primer and polyurethane instead, they now look like new.
If it works, make sure the powder coating is epoxy, otherwise it won't last - UV is not kind to powder coating.

He seemed to think he could powder coat it no problem. Said he had some type of sealer that would prevent the bubbles, showed me a couple of other cast aluminum pieces. So, hope it works. If it does I'm going to do the ports next.

Hopefully it works out for ya! If not, the boot stripe gig as a secondary works for me.

Thats good info to know. If it all goes bad its nice to have a fall back position.
