Chain and Sprocket Helm Issues

Hi all I am base in Aus and have a Martzcraft 35 rigged as a ketch. The design is similar to a Roberts of the same size she had a center cockpit.
During a refit I checked my chain and cable pedestal helm. Upon inspection I have some fairly dodgy work by the previous owner, needless to say I am replacing both cables ( the chain looks ok). When the helm was placed on full port lock, the cable and dodgy cable clamps were being dragged over the bronze steering sprocket (inside the pedestal) damaging several sprocket teeth.
The problem I have is the helm has no brand or identification, nor does the sprocket, it was fitted in Sydney Australia in 1989. I am wondering where I might source a replacement or perhaps whether the sprocket may be able to be repaired? Any help would be greatly appreciated. I’m currently in Melbourne Australia. The callipers are metric.

Re: Chain and Sprocket Helm Issues

Take the sprocket down to a bearing and transmission place such as Bearing Services and they should be able to order you a new one. These are pretty standard off the shelf items.

They may be able to source one with the correct size bore and keyway otherwise take the sprocket they provide to a machine shop and they will bore it out and machine a new keyway.

Thanks for that I think there’s a Bearing Services in Frankston I’ll get onto it tomorrow, I just wasn’t sure about the fact that it has been cast in brass. Thanks again.

Give "The Boat Locker" in Mona Vale a call, 02 99798278. They have an amazing collection of second hand bits an pieces, I saw a number of chain drive pedestals there a few weeks ago. Very helpful people, give a description, no of teeth, bore etc. Closed Tuesday and other random days!!

Thanks for that I’ll give them a call even if I can find a new one as I’d love to be able to identify the pedestal.

Now it’s apart it would be a good idea to replace the chain as well. I believe Edson suggests replacing every 10 years . Good for peace of mind!!

Re: Chain and Sprocket Helm Issues

Well this is proving a little more difficult than I Imagined. I can’t find anyone with a spare part, bearing suppliers are at a loss to even find a stainless sprocket to suit let alone a bronze one (under $400 AUD). As for repairing the old one, the option I’m probably going for, is to silver solder material onto the damaged teeth (not sure how long this will last). CNC machining a new one around the $400AUD mark. New pedestal around $2000 AUD

Re: Chain and Sprocket Helm Issues

Looks an awful lot like a standard 40 or 41B12 sprocket. Hard to imagine the pedestal manufacturer using a roller chain engineered and manufactured specifically for their application. Stainless steel #40 pilot bore (reboreable) sprockets are readily available for less than 50.00.

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00452TM62/ref=biss_dp_t_asn

Could also be a 50B12, if you put SS after that, 50B12SS, they too are readily available, but the price triples. There are, however, many available in surplus for about 50-60.00 US. Check Ebay and such...

https://www.ebay.com/itm/153349-New-....c100005.m1851

If for some strange reason the chain and sprocket are some bastard size, it might make economic sense, if the rest of the pedestal is in good shape, to change the chain and sprockets to some standard roller chain size.

By the way, Edson wants about 400.00 US for their comparable bronze sprockets...

To me your sprocket doesn't look all that bad. The damage to the tips of the teeth doesn't affect the operation or functionality of the sprocket in any way...

Re: Chain and Sprocket Helm Issues

A good machine shop can make you one.
Take the old one with you and explain what it is for etc.
Perhaps a good boat yard has the equipment and skill tool maker too.

It aint gonna be inexpensive.

Re: Chain and Sprocket Helm Issues

Also, measure the chain; that, the number of teeth and the shaft configuration tells you the correct sprocket. 'B' in this case is the hub configuration; the through-drilling of that hub, is likely custom to the pedestal manufacturer, and would probably best be done by the machinist who finish-bores the sprocket for you.
