Can't find the hull number on my Cal 20.

Hello,

I purchased a Cal 20 from a friend. His documentation from the previous owner has no hull number on it and I can't find a hull number anywhere on the inside of the boat or on the transom (inside and out). Can someone tell me exactly where it might be or any other way of finding out what the hull number might be? A local Cal fleet sailor said it's usually on the sails but my sails don't have it. Also, how important is it for me to figure out what the hull number is?

Thanks for your help.

tom.

Re: Can't find the hull number on my Cal 20.

if you look at your reg number it should include the year and hull number in it. our Cal 28, mad in 1967, hull number 181 is; 67181.

Most Cal's I have looked at have the hull number on the inside of the stern in a locker or lazeretts. Black stencilled numbers under fiberglass.

What year is it? All boats that were either manufactured or imported after November 1, 1972, are required by law to have an HIN.

Re: Can't find the hull number on my Cal 20.

Thanks for the reply Sara,

I've looked all over for the stencilled numbers and can't find it. Are they pretty small? There a chance they've been painted over. By reg number do you mean the registration number? I'll double check that as well. I wasn't given much paperwork when I took over the boat unfortunately.

Thanks for your help.

To reiterate, you absolutely need it. Its like a VIN, no number the vessel will be considered stolen.

Hi S/V_Surya,

The documentation I have says N/A for the manufactured date. My buddy picked up the boat by trading some dive gear and he fixed it up to it's current state. The previous owner had next to no information as far as paperwork etc. so I have no idea when it was made or it's hull number. A large part of the interior has been painted all the way to hatch doors so the HIN number might have been painted over I suspect. I'll have a closer look at the documentation I have and the interior again to see if I've missed anything.

Here is a link. Deciphering an HIN - SailNet Community

To register with the state you need the HIN. But on a positive note I bought a small boat off of ebay and when I tried to register it did not have a HIN. I just showed them the bill of sale and they gave me a new HIN.

Re: Can't find the hull number on my Cal 20.

I had a 1970 Cal 25 that did not have a hull number. Had to go to DMV when I lived in Florida and they assigned one.

My current boat a 1963 Tripp-Lentsch 29 does not have a "official" hull number either. For older boats without a hull number (in Connecticut, USA) the registration is used as the ownership documentation.

If it is pre 11/72 then it wasn't required. the USCG asks you to get a state HIN in order to document the boat. I don't think you can document a Cal 20 b/c of the size. Speak with your state DMV on how to get HIN.

Re: Can't find the hull number on my Cal 20.

Thanks everyone. I think my question has been answered. I'll do one final look around to see if I've missed it. If it's not there I'll check my local DMV to see if they can assign a new HIN or if the bill of sale will do.

Many thanks.

Re: Can't find the hull number on my Cal 20.

Hey Tom,

We were working on our Cal this weekend and as I was moving stuff around I discovered (again) that the hull number was written in many places on pieces of wood that make up the cabinetry in the cabin, such as the board that backs the dinette back cushion and the drawers. So maybe poke around and maybe it will turn up ; -)

It was penciled on "C-28 181".

Re: Can't find the hull number on my Cal 20.

Hi Sara,

Ah... that's pretty cool. I was just going through some of that stuff too but didn't think to look for pencil markings of the hull number there. I'll take a closer look. That would be pretty neat if I took of a piece of wood and found the hull number behind it or something.

Thanks again.
