Re: Can you help identify...

This is a RPM-sensor which converts the revolutions of the speedometer cable into electrical impulses. The slotted white centre of the bottom nut seen in picture 2 should be very easy to rotate. That's where you screw in the speedometer cable.

It's used in cars or motorcycles to translate rotations of a wheel into speed and distance. I doubt it's much use on a boat.

You turn the white slotted plastic disk behind the nut at the bottom very quickly. For each turn you should get 4 impulses on the electrical contacts. To make it work you'll need a flexible speedometer cable of the proper dimensions so that the core of the cable fits the slot and the whole cable is held safely by the nut.

This a VDO tacho sensor 340.808.001.xxx which was used on a lot off marine engines in combination with a VDO rev counter. It will produce a voltage signal in the range of app. 0-10 Volts. This sensor was mechanica driven by camshaft revolutions; the rev counter has a ratio of 1:2. Most of the marine engines not are using a so called W signal from the generator or an inductive sensor which count the the number of teeth of vi the flywheel.

Re: Can you help identify...

The better models can be attached to politicians to measure the amount of "spin", although the constant directional changes can damage the sensor.

VDO once made a speed log that relied on a similar sensor connected to a square ended cable. So, possibly this sensor is off a defunct speed log, but an engine application is definitely more likely. I would keep it as it may be useable somewhere.
