C&C Landfall 42 propeller shaft issue.

Hello Peeps

Can any Landfall +/-1976 (aft cockpit) owners give me some feedback on their prop shaft configuration?

My previous boats have always had the engine under the companion way or slightly further aft. The Landfall I own now has the engine under the saloon table. with a long shaft that runs aft exiting the hull about 40 to 50 cm away from the rudder.

When I bought her the engine vibrated excessively, I determined it was a bent shaft and adjusted the offer to compensate.

I contacted the previous owner to ask how it might have been bent as there is almost no way it could have given there is no bare shaft after exiting the cutlass bearing and the propeller.

The mechanic I am dealing with says I should have a support between the coupling and the stuffing box. The shaft runs free and I cannot see where a previous support may have been mounted. It stands to reason that the shaft should be supported after a given length, does anyone know this length? I am aware that width to length ratio will also play a part. It is driven by a 56hp Yanmar.

Thanks in advance!

Depending on shaft dia.
Rule of thumb, about 3ft of unsupported shaft, should have a pillow block or support at 30" spacing, but depends on diameter.
Here's a link for you.

Thanks for that. I was obviously pretty rubbish at my Google search as nothing came up.

Regards
