Butyl Tape and 3M Weatherban

So after reading all the threads on this forum and others extolling the virtues of butyl tape, I decided to try it. I found the variety sold at RV parts outlets (e.g., this one), but also this product: 3M Weatherban Sealant Tape 5354 at 4x the price! The ingredients are polybutylene (30%) and isobutylene-isoprene (10%), so it appears to be butyl tape of sorts also. Has anyone tried the 3M product? And is it significantly better?

That's what I'm using (3/8").

The tape goes along the inside edge to seal and flex, then LifeBoat caulk goes along the outer edge to make it flush with the cabin and as a secondary seal.

OK,I've been waiting to ask this. Can you use the Butyl tape as an adhesive for plex windows mounted outside the opening without screws or bolts? Can you use it to adhere a plastic to the face of the fiberglass deck house covering the opening? Am I clear?

I was going to use the 3m VHB tape used to tape windows to the sides of buildings. Should I use the butyl stuff instead? Will the butyl tape hold my window in place when that 40' wave inside the break water crashes down on my poor boat.

I need a drink.

From everything I read, butyl tape is a very weak adhesive and must be kept mechanically compressed.

I have used butyl tape extensively where appropriate on my Gulf 32 Aeolus and cannot speak highly enough of the stuff. However, I can say with certainty that it is in no practical way an adhesive. If crushed into my non-skid it is a pain to get out, but will roll off of any flat surface pretty easily. It seals well enough with mechanical fastening to not leak at all. Period. It does not dry out, and therefore does not require the removal and rebedding of the hardware as polysulfide does. No stink, no mess, does the job, and permanently. Can't beat that. I extoll the virtues more on my blog at Stories of Aeolus- Our Gulf 32 Pilothouse: I love Butyl rubber for sealing!

We have a local window store (commercial) that I visit to buy the butyl tape. I like the 1/18" by 3/8". 25 feet is $5 or so. We then do as Delmarrey shows, butyl tapes inside and polysulfide outside. We did 3 hatches 2 years ago with the butyl on the flange and a bead of poly sulfide around the inner and outer periphery. Lightly assemble then torque down after the poly sulfide has cured for a day or so.
