Bronze rudder shoe - Taiwanese boats
Trying to find if I can buy this part or custom sand casting is the only way to go? Any help/hint highly appreciated!

Re: Bronze rudder shoe - Taiwanese boats
Port Townsend foundry has a number of moles for various models and parts. If not you may have to send them the original.

yep... contacted Pete about it. But trying to find out if this is something I can just buy instead of custom order it?

Re: Bronze rudder shoe - Taiwanese boats
Without knowing the make of boat I’d take a guess being Taiwanese that it’s a GD casting and chances are you won’t be able to find one off the shelf. I’ve had custom work done by https://www.classic-marine.co.uk at about half the price of PTF but I didn’t have to ship the part (cranes) rather I modified my sprint to suit the casting.

Have you gone to a local machine shop and see what they may be able to fabricate or repair?

This needs to be cast not machined.

Yep, exploring this option now. casting for one item is very costly because it is all based on time and material for mould creation. It seems CNC this part will result in a lot of waist but the end cost is what matters here.
With so many boats built in Taiwan, nobody makes these anymore in industrial quantities and it has to be custom made...

You may be amazed at what a good machinist can come up with. Maybe repair what you have or fabricating something not cast Just a thought. Best of luck.

It’s difficult to offer advice with no indication of the OP’s location. There is much to be said for staying with a provider reasonably close to home. On an international forum it seems prudent to add a location to ones profile.

Re: Bronze rudder shoe - Taiwanese boats
Interesting project Badabim. The more details beyond 'Taiwanese boats' you can provide the more chances there are for better replies.
Could you tell us please:
-which boat (probably the biggest piece of missing information)?
-does the part need to 'bolt on' or is there liberty to re-drill mounting holes, etc. ?
-any foundry trademarks or part numbers still on the casting?
Short of that, some better information about the casting will be useful in the quoting/reverse engineering process:
-overall lengths and widths(top and bottom), height
-major and minor diameter of shaft area
-bottom and wall thickness in pocket area
-weight of casting as-is

As far as casting, you may get more informative responses if we knew where you were or even what boat you're talking about as there may be scrap hull lying about with what you need.

Machining bronze that is suitable in this application is difficult at best. Other alloys are easier to machine (higher zinc content) as you move more into brass alloys which would be very unsuitable in this application. This is why most quality bronze alloy marine parts are cast. Brazing a broken/cracked part can be accomplished but wont be as strong as the original casting, not something you want holding your rudder in place.
