Bottom Paint Peeling

So I bought an old Hobie 16 at a bargain price, and, go figure, it needs some work.

First thing I'd like to take care of is the bottom paint. It's peeling in a spot where it looks like there was a small repair (see pic).

I have no idea what paint was used previously.

Do I need to completely remove the existing paint?

What would be a good paint for the new work? It'll spend most of it's life on a trailer and only be in the water when sailing.

You can either do nothing and enjoy sailing the boat, or sand the hulls down and paint it with polyurethane, single or two part.

Either way, there’s no “bottom paint” on this boat.

Yep.

unless you plan on leaving this boat in the water for days at a time you'll have no problem.
