Bottom paint application cost!!

I just had a price quote by a marina in Florida to.. 1. Acid wash the bottom (1 hr) 2. Sand and feather out paint (3 hours), and 3. Prep prop and shaft (1hr). Hourly rate quoted at $92/hr. Here's the kicker...labor to apply 1 coat (1 gallon) of bottom paint quoted at $720.16. That's USD!! I can run a coat of bottom paint on my boat in about an hour or so with a roller.
Am I missing something??

No you're probably not, although I would throw in an hour or 90 minutes to be generous for taping the waterline and any other masking that needs to be done, prep of the paint and gathering materials and clean up. You might want to just ask them to justify that $720 and see what they say.

Re: Bottom paint application cost!!

Suijin...I did ask. Apparently the rate for bottom paint application is NOT the hourly rate. They use a price of $18/ft. + taxes + "environmental" fees + whatever else they can squeeze.

So, 5hrs x $92 + $720 = their total quote amount?

Re: Bottom paint application cost!!

I'm doing mine this morning. Takes me an hour to tape, maybe 1 hour max to paint. I don't prep the shaft or prop not sure what that is about not do I acid wash.

Everything is all ready to go. This year I bought new tyvek suit, new roller frame. My 1 gal of paint blue water 45 was $125 with Jamestown discount.

$720 seems "reasonable", my brother paid more than that in RI to have his new regulator 28 painted.

I think you're missing the price of the quick haul and blocking to do the work.

Re: Bottom paint application cost!!

You are fortunate. A gallon of Micron CSC here in Canada self for $269 on sale. Why bother with a quote if you can do it yourself, sounds like you will done in a afternoon, with enough left over for a bottle of wine?

Re: Bottom paint application cost!!

Thanks for the feedback everyone. I had already paid to have the boat hauled out, pressure washed and blocked. I supplied the 1 gallon of paint needed (Seahawk Biocop). The boatyard added 3 hours of labor to sand and feather the existing bottom paint plus some other work I don't need. The quote of $720 to apply one gallon of bottom paint just doesn't add up

Re: Bottom paint application cost!!

It took me 4 hours per side to paint the bottom of my 28' water line boat in December. At $92/hr that comes to $736. I'd say you are being offered a good deal. If you could paint my boat in one hour and do a good job I would be willing to pay $500/hr

Re: Bottom paint application cost!!

Can you get away with one US gallon (3.8 litres) of paint on a 34 ft hull? I have just used 5 litres of Micron 77 on just the hull which gave two coats. The keels needed another 1.5 litres

In a years time I will need to do the same again with a decent quality paint coming in at £120 or $140 for a US gallon

How does taping up take an hour? its 10 minutes with a roll of masking tape.

Also what is an acid wash? and finally sanding for 3 hours? are they dry sanding antifoul paint? bit of a no no this side of the pond even with a mask.

Pete

Re: Bottom paint application cost!!

Hi all, on a side note, I'm planning on doing a bottom paint on our cat next week.

Question: What's the best way to get to the areas on the hull where the boat is supported on the cradle?

Some people have suggested quickly touching up the 'missed bits' as the boat goes on the trailer (before the travel lift) and hope that the paint drys before it hits the water an hour or so later. Any other tips or ideas?

Re: Bottom paint application cost!!

Just had my 1973 Cal 35 pulled and I did the work myself with a helper during the sanding(it had been in the water 15 years)

$495 to pull boat, pressures wash bottom and leave on hard for 30 days with electric and water.
Bottompaint store.com had ..Copper Shield™ - 45% Copper Ablative..on sale with rebates $109 Gallon (2 gallons) and it is great paint
Also put epoxy barrier coat on $149 gallon(2 gallons)
Took 2 of us 6 hours to sand bottom
To keep from sanding between any coat it has to all be done in the same day. Epoxy bottom coat both sides 2 hours, recoat 1 hours later (2 more hours).1 hours after finishing epoxy applied RED ablative paint 2 hours both sides..the applied BLACK ablative paint 2 hours THen added another coat on leading edges.
$550 paint and epoxy and a long hard dawn to dusk day

Top much easier 3 hours of light sanding, 2 coats of Bluewater Mega gloss paint(2 gallons) $45 gallon on sale with rebate and free shipping aty Bottompaintstore.com
3 hours of painting and my boat looks unbelivable

Are you sure they were not quoting the entire job? The mark up on the paint is a killer.

Re: Bottom paint application cost!!

It appears that you never owned a business. You're probably right but the yard guy might even make $20 an hour but half to 3/4 of the difference is made up of payroll taxes, property taxes, business license fees, employee benefits, environmental fees, sexual harassment and environmental training and ton of other useless carp that a business owner has to go through which has nothing to do with making your happy with their work. Do yourself a favor and have fun at the same time: Sail your boat to Mexico and get superior work for a third less money and in a third less time. This forum can recommend a lot of good yards in Mexico or elsewhere in the Caribbean.
