Bottom Paint

Can you give me some advice on bottom paint? We have a trailered trimaran. The boat will be in salt water for around 3 months a year, then in fresh water for short periods of time the rest of the year. I know very little about bottom paint, but hoping to find something durable enough to last for a few years before it needs attention.

Re: Bottom Paint

The major bottom paint manufacturers have selection guides on their websites. Go to them, answer a few questions and their recommendation appears.

You can also go to marinas and/or boatyards in your area and ask what they use and why.

I will also say that bottom preparation and painting is hard, backbreaking work and in most cases you're dealing with hazardous materials. This is one thing I pay someone else to do.

Re: Bottom Paint

You will need to use an ablative paint, as hard paints cannot withstand prolonged exposure to air. And bear in mind that at least on ablative (Interlux Micron 66) cannot withstand prolonged exposure to freshwater.
