bottom paint?

hello everyone,
I am trying to pick out my bottom paint. I have a 36ft sail boat. We don't do many long distance trips. The boat is located in the long island sound and we haul out for winter storage. I want to use an ablative paint. But I can't decide if i should go with interlux or west marine brand. The interlux ones are much more expensive. Are they worth it? is the west marine ones just as good?

I don't know what the West Marine one will be. But International paints are very good products.

I think if you dig around...you will find Interlux may be the maker of West Marine's bottom paints.... I know at one time they were. You might take a close look at this one:

I used their "hard" bottom paint....and was quite pleased with it.

Ciba® IRGAROL® 1051
Irgarol® 1051 is a highly specific and effective inhibitor of photosynthesis. This makes it ideal, combined with its very low water solubility, for use in long-life antifouling coatings for marine applications to prevent the growth of algae.
While Irgarol® shows outstanding performance in the control of algae, it has comparatively low biological activitiy to animals in general, including fish, shellfish and humans. It is therefore an ideal active substance for the formulation of biocide packages with a designed performance profile, where it is combined with other active ingredients to control additional target organisms.
In antifoulling paints, Irgarol 1051 is often combined with copper, or copper compounds, such as cuprous oxide, or copper thiocyanate. While Irgarol 1051 effectively controls algae, copper is effective at controlling animals.
Irgarol® 1051 may also be used as the sole biologically active ingredient in coatings for mariculture devices such as fish nets or oyster racks.

Interlux is a subsidiary of Akzo Nobel (as is International Marine Coatings, Inc.) and is the brand name of their line of anti fouling paints in North America.

It's a difficult one to measure. Because speed of water and duration affects wear. Unless you could moor your boat in a controlled stream of water and measure the wear rate, it is a little difficult to compare. Although I imagine one brand is going to wear differently to another. Of course, that may not be a bad thing. It depends on if the paint does the job and lasts the season. That is the time ruffly that the coatings are designed to last.

I like off-beat brands that work! i'm in Florida so I've used Seahawk with varying degrees of success. I called them to ask about compatability of other paints and the rep that called me back must have had the worst day EVER because he truned me off completely by bad mouthing every other brand of paint. Back to Trinidad until I had it blasted and then I went with a hard ablative made somewhere near Ft. Myers. It's different and like the French say If you can get passed the smell it's great!
