Boric Acid - Where to Buy in Australia?

Pharmacies don't have it here as a general over the counter item. I tried all over the place about a year ago because I wanted to mix up some anti cockroach concoction.

While not sailing I'm a farming guy. I think you are looking for Boracic Acid, more commonly known as Borax (not the unfunny movie guy - the chemical!) it's also used for roach control. I buy Borax from Agricultural supplies outlets in 20kg sacks - not expensive. Boatbuilders I have spoke to suggest; nay, strongly suggest "don't treat rot - cut it out", for what that's worth. Same stuff, actually. However, to get Boric or Boracic Acid from borax, it must be reacted with hydrochloric acid.

I agree with the farmer Bill above; cut it out and put in some good new timber. But if you're wanting to put the rot into a holding pattern for a while, try an antifreee coolant concentrate from the auto store; the ethylene glycol within does the job. You can no longer get boric over the counter in oz, but I've found the glycol does the trick; just slosh it on. Check the lable for concentration info.

Boric acid [H3BO3, or B(OH)3], is also sometimes called boracic acid, hydrogen borate, or orthoboric acid, or acidum boricum.

Boric acid is less hygroscopic than (the related salt) Borax, so it flows and can be blown into crevices more easily from a squeeze bottle. The acid has an abrasive consistency that some claim scrapes the protective oily coating from the roaches chitinous shell. Once this protective layer is scratched, the poison can more readily penetrate the insect's body.

I have bought some Boric Acid to get rid of cockroach and other pest from www.boricacidaus.com.au You can try there, they offer free delivery and back then I found them to be the cheapest as well.
