Bonding of thru hulls

We acquired a 1986 Tashiba 36 built by TaShing about a year ago. PO owner restored the boat about 10 years ago and generally did a nice job of it. All thru hull fittings and valves were replaced (bronze) but new fittings did not have ears for making the bonding system connections. Rudder bearing and engine are still connected. Other Thru hulls are not currently connected, but the wiring is still in place. Should we find a way to make the connections or not worry about it? Pros and cons of either course?

The boat does have a copper grounding plate and a couple of zincs on the hull aft, one on the max prop.
Thanks!

Re: Bonding of thru hulls

I found THIS, scroll down to "Bonding and Electrolytic Corrosion Due to Hot Marinas".

Quote:
Do not bond any thru-hulls or other immersed metal that can be electrically isolated. Specifically, keep your metal keel/ballast, your metal rudder shaft, your engine/prop, and all thru-hulls electrically isolated, from each other, and from the engine.

hope it helps.

Re: Bonding of thru hulls

Bonding the through hulls seems to be an American way of doing things. European boats have the through hulls completely isolated. Only the rudder shaft and prop shaft are bonded to a underwater anode on our boat and it came like this from the manufacturer.

Next time you lift out it will be worth checking that the bonding goes to an underwater anode and it is electrically connected with a meter. Wires hidden in bilges do tend to corrode and create poor contacts.

Re: Bonding of thru hulls

Good PS article at your link, Travis. All more complicated than I imagined, but there is always so much more to learn. Needless to say we will be going over our ground wiring.

The end of the article provides some insight into why everything was originally bonded together on our boat and why that is not now the best choice.

"In the old days, the technique of bonding everything together worked okay. In its defense, the "bond everything together" approach makes your boat less sensitive to electrolytic corrosion that can result from faulty wiring on your own boat. The problem is, the "bond everything" approach leaves your boat totally defenseless to wiring errors in nearby boats and nearby industry, that cause stray DC currents to run through the water.

Today the technique of bonding everything together would still work fine if your boat spent all of its time on the high seas, in remote anchorages, or in marinas that were wired perfectly and in which all of the nearby yachts were wired perfectly. Having underwater metal bonded together in crowded marina's today, however, is asking for expensive trouble."
