That can
work well.

In the old days, (mostly among fishing/work boats,) it was quite common to have a manual
bilge pump in the cockpit that discharged right out its side into the cockpit.
Of course, all the oily
bilge water and
fish scales covered the cockpit sole, but hey, everybody had on hip-boots and oilskins anyway.

Your way will be more "Yachting" in nature.
