Best Way to Clean an Old Mast?

I have a 1979 LIDO 14 and am in the process of cleaning it up. The mast is a mess and I'm not sure if sanding and repainting it will be the best way to fix it. Any ideas?

If it painted, it will need particle blasting, priming, and then Awlgrip. All hardware should be removed and inspected as well.
